Parametric Polymorphism Through Run-time Sealing

چکیده

We show how to extend System F’s parametricity guarantee to a multi-language system in the style of Matthews and Findler that combines System F with an untyped language by use of dynamic sealing. While the use of sealing for this purpose has been suggested before, it has never been proven to preserve parametricity. In this paper we prove that it does using step-indexed logical relations. Note: This is a draft from Fall 2011. It was updated in February 2017 to elide unfinished sections that did not pertain to the parametricity result.

Constraint-Based Type Inference and Parametric Polymorphism

Constraint-based analysis is a technique for inferring implementation types. Traditionally it has been described using mathematical formalisms. We explain it in a different and more intuitive way as a flow problem. The intuition is facilitated by a direct correspondence between run-time and analysis-time concepts. Precise analysis of polymorphism is hard; several algorithms have been developed ...

Compiling with Non-Parametric Polymorphism

There is a middle ground between parametric and ad-hoc polymorphism in which a computation can depend upon a type parameter but is restricted to being de ned at all types in an inductive fashion. We call such polymorphism non-parametric. We show how nonparametric polymorphism can be used to implement a variety of useful language mechanisms including overloading, unboxed data representations in ...

Intensional Effect Polymorphism

Type-and-effect systems are a powerful tool for program construction and verification. We describe intensional effect polymorphism, a new foundation for effect systems that integrates static and dynamic effect checking. Our system allows the effect of polymorphic code to be intensionally inspected through a lightweight notion of dynamic typing. When coupled with parametric polymorphism, the pow...

A Blame for All (revised)

Several programming languages are beginning to integrate static and dynamic typing, including Racket, Microsoft’s C# 4.0 (Hejlsberg 2010) and TypeScript (Hejlsberg, 2012), Facebook’s PHP (Verlaguet, 2013), and the research languages Sage (Gronski, Knowles, Tomb, Freund, and Flanagan, 2006) and Thorn (Wrigstad, Eugster, Field, Nystrom, and Vitek, 2009). However, an important open question remain...

Blame for All: a Bug

Several programming languages are beginning to integrate static and dynamic typing, including Racket (formerly PLT Scheme), Perl 6, and C# 4.0 and the research languages Sage (Gronski, Knowles, Tomb, Freund, and Flanagan, 2006) and Thorn (Wrigstad, Eugster, Field, Nystrom, and Vitek, 2009). However, an important open question remains, which is how to add parametric polymorphism to languages tha...
